Earning Academic Credit for Teenagers Abroad Programs

We are aware that the main reasons for participating in one of our language immersion programs usually includes experiencing the behavior of a different culture and society in another country. However, while doing so, it may be also possible to earn academic credit for completing one of our Teenager Abroad programs.

Brookhaven College in Texas is now offering college credits to high school students who complete one of our programs in Barcelona, Spain; Nice, France; Montreal, Canada; or Rome, Italy! In order to qualify for credits, you must study in a program offing Standard or Intensive language courses for a minimum of 3 weeks and be at least 16 years of age by the program’s start date.

Independent Study & Performance Testing
It is sometimes the case that schools don’t accept credit transfers from a foreign program or school. In this case, your home school may structure an accredited independent study, reading course or internship abroad. Upon return from the program set by your school, you’ll be required to deliver a report; or you may have to complete performance testing in the studied language with your school to obtain the academic credits. Be sure to ask your school in advance about these possibilities!

Earning Credits in a Foreign Country can be Challenging!
Many programs & schools grant credits to students who complete the necessary courses; however, your school in your home country may limit the value of the earned credits at their discretion.

If your top priority for participating in one of our Teenagers Abroad programs is to earn academic credit, then it is imperative that you speak with your high school guidance department or language department before booking courses.

You should inquire if your school will accept grades, transcripts, work, etc… that is transferred from one of our language schools in your desired country. If you wish to be granted any credits, you must obtain written pre-approval from a qualified school official. You will then be required to attend no less than 90% of your classes, complete all assigned written work, and once you return home, you may have to prepare a presentation or write a follow-up paper on your experiences.

Understanding "Class" & "Credit" Hours
Typically, one month of language immersion abroad is equivalent to studying a language for one year in high school or to studying a language for one semester at a college/university. We realize that every student learns at his/her own pace; however, it should be noted that, based on averages, it is possible to learn as much in an excellent 4 week language immersion program abroad as it is to learn in an entire year of high school!

Please be aware that most universities in America require 15 class hours for 1 semester credit or 10 class hours per credit when using the quarter system. Also, they do not accept more than 25 class hours per week. Usually, 1 credit is transferable per week of language study abroad.

Qualifying for Credit Retroactively
Oftentimes, during the SAT or ACT exams, high school students take a foreign language proficiency test. Statistics show that the students who have spent time abroad studying a language score significantly higher on these exams, when compared to students who have not been abroad for language learning.

Retroactive credit or ‘retro credit’ may be available for foreign language credits at the university/college you wish to attend, based on your proficiency test’s results.

Volunteer & Internship Options
Many North American high schools are making volunteering and community service work a requirement for graduating. Through several of our language immersion programs you may be able to fulfill this volunteer requirement. Talk with your guidance counselor before enrolling to ensure that it is possible to do so and to have all of the appropriate paperwork and documents that our staff may need to complete. It is important that all official paperwork be completed & signed onsite, because it is very difficult to organize once you have returned home.
