When living abroad, feeling safe and “at home” is very important for the learning process because students can focus better on their work when in a safe and comfortable environment.
The most effective way to full immerse into the Spanish culture and language of Costa Rica is to live with a local “Tico” host family.
All host families in Costa Rica are carefully selected through a standardized procedure carried out by our staff. After host families are chosen, they receive regular visits by the school’s personnel to make certain that they are maintaining the high standards of living.
In order to qualify as a host family in Costa Rica, the home must be within a reasonable distance from the language school, have sufficient living space, and the home must provide students with a clean, safe and comfortable environment to live in.
Host families in Costa Rica should make you feel like you're at your “home away from home” by taking time to have daily conversations with you. It is important to keep in mind that usually the host families in Costa Rica have a different cultural background than that of our students. This means that students have to adapt to the new customs and be opened to meals that they may not be accustomed to. Still though, students are expected attempt to get along with the host family, as well as to obey all house rules.
Other points for students to consider:
• Access to all of the house’s living areas is granted
• Students must share the bathroom
• Students must bring towels, bed linens & pillows are provided
• Laundry services or facilities will be made available
• 2 meals are provided daily, lunch in restaurants
• Students share rooms with other students of the same gender and age during weekend overnight tours
Chaperones (usually a host family member) escort students to & from the language school every day.
