Paris is one of the most magnificent cities in the world! Around every corner, there is something new and interesting to be discovered, such as the Louvre with its amazing collection of works including the Mona Lisa, or the glowering gargoyles hanging from the Notre Dame, or even the can-can dancers at the infamous Moulin Rouge.

The city is divided into two banks. The Left Bank is the intellectual heart of Paris with its famous Sorbonne University, chic neighborhoods and Latin Quarter. The Right Bank of Paris host the Louvre and much more.

While Napoleon II was in power, Baron Haussmann constructed many of Paris’ wide avenues, which now provides for great vistas that showcase the city’s many sights and attractions, including the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. These famous avenues, such as the Champs-Elzsees, are beautifully lined with trees, fountains and gardens.

Paris is a city of many restaurants that range from 3-star eateries to Parisian-style brasseries to family-friendly restaurants. The city is also filled with wonderful cafes, where you can enjoy simple, yet flavorful, dishes pretty much anywhere around town. It’s the perfect city to start your morning with a croissant and cup of coffee and have a French baguette picnic on a park bench where you can share your crumbs with the pigeons.

Paris is the city that practically invented the nightclub scene as we all know it today. The famous Moulin Rouge, Folies-Bergere and the Crazy Horse Saloon all still hold Las Vegas style shows every night! Paris is also world famous for its fantastic jazz clubs. In the early 1900’s African American musicians were treated better in Paris than in the U.S. and their influence brought the tradition of great jazz to Europe. Paris also offers some of the trendiest and youngest dance clubs and discos in the world! Other than clubbing, France’s capital also offers a seemingly unlimited amount of famous monuments, landmarks, lavish parks, royal places, wide avenues and ancient fortresses.

Culture in Paris:
Paris has many museums that shouldn’t be missed when visiting the city, such as the Musee du Louvre, the Musee d’Orsay, the Musee des Antiquites, St. Germain-en-Laye, the Musee de la Poupee, the Centre National d’Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou, and the Cite des Sciences et de l’industrie. Paris is widely known for its great selection of theaters, ballets and concert halls as well.

Fashion in Paris:
Paris is known as the fashion capital of the world by most. Paris has even been called the Mecca of fashion. These are hard statements to argue with once you realize that Paris is the home to many of the world’s leading designer brands, perfumes and accessories. Some of the most notable brands coming from Paris include: Cardin, Chanel, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Christian Lacroix.
Although many famous designer clothes come from Paris, it doesn’t make them cheaper to buy. Most of the brands previously named are very expensive and you’ll only find the higher class citizens of Paris wearing such clothing on a daily basis.
With that said, there should be no worries about what you need to wear while you study abroad in Paris. The people in Paris dress as they do in most other major cities around Europe. The driving factor of what to wear is largely based on one’s job or the weather. The only recommended clothing item we suggest to bring is a raincoat, regardless of what time of year you’re traveling.

Shopping in Paris:
Aside from art, culture, museums and restaurants, shopping also plays a major role in what makes Paris so great. Paris is world-renowned for its specialty wines, cheeses, perfumes, fashion, jewelry, fashion accessories and exquisite antiques. From luxurious boutiques to large department stores, to flea markets and second-hand stores, the possibilities to shop while in Paris are endless!

High Fashion and Haute Couture:
Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honré and Avenue Montaigne in the 8th arrondissement are where the top emporiums and boutiques for Haute Couture can be found. Shops in the 8th arrondissement include: Cartier, Celine, Chanel, Christian Dior, Van Cleef & Arpels, Christian Lacroix, and many others. In the 16th arrondissement, Yves Saint Laurent can be found, as well as many shops carrying the latest fashion, leather goods, perfumes, jewelry and other fashion accessories.

French Department Stores:
The Au Printemps and Galeries Lafayette shopping centers are two of the largest in Paris. They are located side-by-side in the 9th arrondissement on Boulevard Haussmann. Some of the other most popular department stores of Paris are La Samaritaine, Bazar de l'Hôtel de Ville - BHV, and Le Bon Marché.

Flea Markets of Paris:
Paris is a great city to find fantastic deals at flea markets. They tend to move around the city, depending on the day of the week, but there is always a great deal to be found! Although flea markets are an excellent way to inexpensively shop, we caution that you be aware of pickpockets while fighting the crowds.

Les Bouquinistes:
Along the River Siene, you’ll find various stands and tents selling second-hand volumes of great literature. These small stands offer a intellectual charm to the city of Paris.

Food in Paris:
This is obviously a very important point when talking about Paris, or anywhere in France for that matter. You’ll be able to find just about anything your heart desires in the city of Paris. Although, traditional French cooking has changed a bit over the years and may not be what your parents claim it is. Traditional French at one time was very creamy and rich, but nowadays the French are cooking much lighter and healthier dishes.
Over the years, French cuisine has been introduced to many ethnic flavors from the abundance of immigrants coming from the Middle-East, Indochina, the Caribbean and the South Pacific, which gives their meals much variety.
When going out to dinner in Paris, here are some recommended districts to browse for the perfect restaurant:
Montparnasee – an ideal district to find a quaint café for a coffee and a croissant. The entire area is surrounded by wonderful old buildings that have been recently restored.
Montmartre – this district is the home to most of the city’s tourist restaurants.
Belleview – restaurants in this district are typically inexpensive, spicy and very tasty! If you’re looking for North Africa or other ethnic flavors, this is the district to search.
Latin Quarter – here you’ll find an abundance of Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants, as well as bistros with more traditional French menus.

Nightlife in Paris:
Paris offers a nightlife that’s livelier than most other cities. There is a wide variety of bars, discos and nightclubs throughout the city, all of which are filled with people looking to enjoy the night! The city is known for its variety in music & dance clubs, such as techno, house, garage and Latino. Admission to such clubs is usually around 15 Euros, which then includes one free drink. The clubs typically open around 23:00 and close after the sun rises the next morning! The ‘coolest’ clubbers don’t show up until after 3:00 and never before midnight! Montmartre, Sacre-Coeur and Bastille are the districts with the most popular clubs in Paris. Although, the Oberkampf has become increasingly fashionable among the younger crowd as of late.
Live music can be found at the opera, the theater or at local cafes around the city. Some of the best music can be found in the Pigalle area, which is also Paris’ sex center. For a clearner and safer area, the Marais district also offers great live music.

Climate in Paris:
All four season of the year hit Paris. Summer months in Paris are warm and dry with a maximum temperature averaging of around 24ºC. In autumn and winter it can become quite cold in Paris with temperatures averaging just around 2ºC. In the spring time, it gets warmer and nicer again, but there is a fair amount of rain.
