Opportunities for Volunteering in San Jose

Learn Spanish & Volunteer in Costa Rica during a Teenagers Abroad Summer Camp Program in San Jose!

Spanish Courses - Study Abroad - Learn Spanish - Volunteer abroad - summer camp

In addition to Spanish courses, exciting excursions and extracurricular activities, we offer students of the Teenagers Abroad Summer Camp Program in San Jose the opportunity to get involved with the local community by volunteering with the following rewarding organizations:

Volunteer at public schools in economically depressed areas:
Volunteers will work with groups of 7-12 year-old students.
Volunteers will teach basic English, sing songs in Spanish and English, help to maintain the school’s facilities, and help children work in the school’s vegetable garden.

Environmental Protection:
In a national park near Heredia, students will help the park’s staff with building & maintaining trails, reforestation and protecting wildlife. Students will learn through seminars about the jobs of the park rangers, challenges that they face, their resources for protecting the environment and hear about what the national park system is doing to preserve Costa Rica’s nature.

Orphanage for Children:
Participants will work with girls ages 4 to 11.
Volunteers will help the orphanage’s English teacher with songs and vocabulary, participate in recreational activities with the children and help with any cleaning and maintenance that is needed.

Nursing Home - Helping Seniors:
At this nursing home, senior citizens are there only during the day, there are no overnight residents.
Volunteers will participate in recreational activities with the seniors, such as bingo and cards, singing songs or helping the women do their make-up. It is also expected that volunteers help the staff during mealtime.

Recycling Project:
Local residents have organized a center to sort recyclables before sending them to the main recycling centers.
Volunteers will help sort the recyclables and partake in lectures explaining the consequences of pollution on future generations and the environment. Students will also learn ways that they can prevent pollution and how to reduce the amount of garbage they produce.
