About Berlin
Few cities have gone through the kind of dramatic transformation that Berlin has experienced over the past 30 years and the result is a city that is trendy and unexpected. While very little physical evidence of the Berlin Wall's existence remains, there is a still a duality in the layout of the city that sets it apart. When you study in Berlin you can expect to see the alternative side of Germany - modern museums, post-modern art, punk rockers and more. This a city that is evolving, historical, and cultural. It is a big, modern metropolis full of artists and musicians, mixing and marching to the beat of their own drums (or synthesizers). Berlin has a very young population and plenty of students, so its a great place to live and study abroad with other young, international people!
School
The school campus consists of 5 beautifully updated buildings in Kastanienallee, in the heart of trendy Prenzlauer Berg, in what was formerly East Berlin. This is an extremely lively neighborhood with fashionable boutiques, art galleries, and dozens of restaurants and cafés. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, this has become the "go to“ neighbourhood for young people, hip locals, and visitors alike.
Language Course
The Teenagers Abroad German summer program offers high school students the following course options for German Courses in Berlin:
Standard German Courses:
4 group lessons per day (15 hours per week)
The Teenagers Abroad German Camp includes:
Class size: max. 12 students
Standard German courses held 3:30-7:00pm on Mondays
Standard German courses held 4:00-7:15pm, Tuesday - Friday
German courses for all language levels
Teachers are qualified professionals & native German speakers
Students will receive a Language Certificate at the end of the program
International Student Body:
We expect that 90% of students attending our courses in Berlin will be non-native English speakers from Europe, Asia & Latin America. The remaining 10% will be English native speakers from North America and/or the UK.
Number of students attending the course:
Based on 2017 attendance records, we expect to have 60-80 students in July and 50-70 students in August.
A typical day includes:
Breakfast: 9:00 - 10:00am
Organised activities: 10:00 - 2:00pm
Lunch: 2:00 - 3:30pm
German Courses: 3:30 - 7:00pm
Evening meal/ evening activities: 7:00 - 12:00am
Accommodation & Meals
Students participating in the German program will have the choice between three accommodation options:
Residence Accommodation:
- Central location
- On campus
- 3-5 person rooms
- 2 meals a day (breakfast and dinner)
Hostel Accommodation:
- Central location
- Multi-bed rooms
- 2 meals a day (breakfast and dinner)
- 5-10 min. walk from school
Host Family Accommodation:
- Double rooms
- 2 meals a day (breakfast and dinner)
- Students travel to/from school using public transportation
- Housing located 20 to 40 minutes from the school
- Available to students with prior knowledge of German
Activities & Excursions
The supervised activity program includes:
- Daily morning and evening activities
- Weekly full day excursion
Our program in Berlin provides participants with plenty free time after courses to learn more about Germany, its culture, traditions, customs and everyday life. Students will participate in cultural and social activities with their new international classmates which will give them the opportunity to practice their new German language skills while they make new friends.
Curfew & Supervision
Level of supervision: LOW
Outside of German classes and planned activities, students are unsupervised. They are allowed to leave the campus without adult supervision at any time during the day or night. The German law only allows minor students to stay out until midnight, however the camp staff cannot impose the curfew or control when participants return to their accommodation.
Travel & Arrival Information
Arrival airport: Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BER)
Transfers from Berlin International Airport are included on the day of arrival (Sunday) and on the day of departure (Sunday) from 8:00am until 10:00pm.
Passports / Visa / Length of stay:
Students are responsible for arranging their own visas, passports, and any permits needed to study abroad. For more information about visas, permits, passports, and general country entry requirements, visit CIBT official website.
Flights:
Students are responsible for making all flight arrangements for travel to/from Berlin. Upon arrival at the Berlin airport, one of our staff members will meet the student and take them to their accommodation.
Travel Insurance:
Teenagers Abroad participants have the option to book our Travel Health Insurance.
