Our Bavarian Summer program is located in Holzkirchen, a traditional Bavarian town only 20 minutes south of Munich. Located to the north of the Bavarian Alps on the River Isar, the stunning Alps, green hills, flowered cottages and famous Lake Tegernsee are all nearby by.

Holzkirchen (pop 16,000) is a historic market town and the largest town in the Miesbach district. Located only 20 miles south of Munich, local commuter trains provide rapid transportation throughout the metropolitan area and access to the many cultural offering of Munich.

This is a safe and quiet town but has numerous oppurtunities for recreational activities in the mountains and lakes of the Bavarian Alps and nearby Austria.

Just 20 minutes away you will find Munich a city with a strong cultural scene, richly endowed art collections and excellent shopping. The city is known for it's grand Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and neo-classical architecture and world-class museums and galleries.

Located in the center of Holzkirchen in the central market place, our small school is housed in a well kept two storied building next to a bakery and a popular cafe. It has 7 nicely decorated classrooms, reception and social lounge and holds 70 students.

Students are expected to travel to/from the school on their own every day - normally by public transit.

The lessons are a good balance between conversation, grammar, and reading, listening and writing. Although this is an academic program, the emphasis is very much on the pleasure and benefits of learning a language, so that you return home positively motivated and eager to improve, thus making the following academic year a more effective time.

All our teachers are local native German teachers, many of them have lived and taught German abroad and also speak several other languages, therefore relating easily to different cultures.

School facilities include:
7 bright large classrooms
Social areas / snack bar
Small class sizes
Located on the marketplace
Next to shops, cafes, bakery
Surrounded by spectacular scenery

International student body:
We expect 80% of students attending to be non native English speakers, mainly coming from around Europe / 20% will be English speakers from North America & UK. These numbers are estimated based on 2007 enrollments!

German language program: (20 lessons per week)

Note: this program is open to students with some previous knowledge of German - not open to absolute beginners. Class size: max of 12 students per class.

Classes are taught by native teachers and they use the communicative method of teaching which combines all aspects and skills of language such as grammar, conversation, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, listening and writing, in an interactive way that makes language learning interesting and meaningful . This is attained with the help of teaching materials that have been specially designed and developed for each age group. The school offers 3 levels: elementary, intermediate, advanced.

Number of students attending:
We expect 70 international students each week during the summer

After classes are over for the day, our program allows the student plenty of time for our optional sports, cultural and social activities. It also allows the student to make new international friends among their new classmates, experience cultural activities together and practice their new language skills in real life situations.

The program includes:
> 3 activities per week within Holzkirchen
> 1 half day excursion per week: Munich, local sights
> 1 full day excursion per week: Lake Tegernsee or Castle Neuschwanstein
> Local transport pass for getting around
> Sunday’s are free and spent with the host family.

Host Family: (private room) with 3 meals daily.

All families are chosen after a careful selection procedure and are visited regularly by the school to ensure that high living standards are maintained. Our host families allow students access to all living areas in the house and in many cases; students will be expected to share the bathroom. All bed linens and pillows will be provided, however we suggest you bring your own towels.

Your family does not provide a laundry service, however in most cases they will allow you to use the laundry facilities for a small additional charge.

The family provides 3 meals daily, with a packed lunch that is usually eaten with the other students and teachers at the school. On Wednesdays, everyone joins in a picnic lunch during the excursion. The families are normally located between 10-20 minutes travelling distance (normally by local public transit) from the school and town center.

STUDENT FEEDBACK

"My room was in a house on a hill, the room was comfortable and my room mates, great!

The way of teaching and the environment are relaxing. Be good and be prepared."
Stan W. (Age: 14)
________________________________

"During my time in Germany, I was able to vastly increase my comfort with the German language, especially in the listening and speaking aspects.

Being immersed in a culture and its language greatly help the learning of a language. I was able to see and do many things unique to Munich and the area.

Going to the various museums, the old town, and other sites helped make the trip something to remember. My host family was wonderful, providing me with everything I needed or could even ask for. The school was very nice. It was challenging, and yet not strenuous.

The overall program helped me learn, but at a pace I found comfortable. Future Advice: Bring a mobile telephone, and the necessary electronic adaptors."
Marco (age 18)

"An intense but fun experience filled with chances to meet new friends and experience new things."
