Spend your summer in SHANGHAI
and enjoy a full schedule of sports, leisure, cultural activities and excursions with other international students of the same age....

Shanghai is probably the most evocative city for an outsider in the whole of China.

Beijing may be more purely, mysteriously Chinese but only Shanghai offers such a heady brew of half-digested images and preconceptions.

For the second city of the world’s oldest surviving ancient civilization, Shanghai is surprisingly new. Literally ‘On the Sea’, Shanghai is a port city on the Huangpu River, where the Yangzi River empties into the East China Sea.

The Huangpu River separates the old and new Shanghai, with the historic Bund promenade on one side and the futuristic Pudong New Area on other. The Old Town contains some cultural delights, such as the Yuyuan Gardens and Bazaar, while Renmin Square is the focus of the city’s Communist tradition, the site of many a protest and home to the Shanghai Government.

Today, the Yuyuan Gardens in Shanghai’s Old Town is all that remains of the city’s pre-colonial past. Colonial are visible in the period architecture in the French Concession, as well as the grand old buildings - the Customs House, Peace Hotel and Shanghai Club - along the grand parade of the Bund.

This program has been designed for students who would like to learn the Mandarin language but also enjoy rich Chinese culture and to mix with other international students from all over the world!

Our beautiful academic campus is located in central Shanghai in the Former French Concessionin District (between Huaihai Lu and the jinjiang Hotel).

This is a charming section of the city characterized by leafy tree-lined streets, beautiful, old crumbling European architecture, and crowned by the chic shopping street Huai Hai Middle Road. The area offers many upscale boutiques, cafes, bars and shopping centers.

On the budget side you will discover the Huating Market, a bustling open air market where shoppers bargain hard with the vendors. The nostalgia of old Shanghai can be felt even more strongly by visiting the residence of Sun Yat-sen and his wife, Soong Qing Ling. Their home has been beautifully preserved and visitors can walk the grounds.

Our school is housed in a modern residential complex which provides a private garden, comfortable & modern classrooms and lounge areas.

International student body:
We expect 50% of students attending to be native English speakers, mainly coming from North America / 25% will be from Europe & 25% will be from Asia / Australia. These numbers are estimated based on 2007 enrollments!

School facilities include:
12 Bright large classrooms
Social areas / snack bar
Small class sizes max 12 students
Lounges & social areas
Computer lab & wireless Internet access
School garden with terraces

This program is an excellent option for school groups of 10 or more students travelling and studying together. For more information on our Teenagers Abroad Groups Services and Options, please click on this link: GroupsAbroad.com

DAY CAMP OPTION
We also offer the opportunity to those students visiting with family or living in Shanghai to take part in classes and weekday activities with full camp students, but stay with their families during evenings and weekends.

Summer Chinese program: (4 lessons daily)
> Max 12 students per class
> 5 language levels with set beginner dates

Receive transferable credits for this course (if required)

Each student will take a short placement test on the first Monday morning of the course (unless the student is a complete beginner) to determine the student's language level and ensure placement in the correct class. Lessons are usually held in the mornings starting at 9am from Monday - Friday. Each lesson is normally 50 minutes in duration.

Teachers are native speakers, hold University degrees and are trained to teach Chinese to foreign students. They will help enhance your speaking, listening, grammar and general comprehension skills. Beginner students will not be bogged down by hours of learning to write Chinese characters - you will begin basic Chinese conversation immediately! As you progress, you will be learning more and more conversational Chinese, along with writing simplified Chinese characters!

Our friendly and helpful international team will run a fully supervised activity program, which reflects the students’ needs and wishes. All students will be supervised 24 hours a day and a monitor is responsible for every group of 8 students.

Daily schedule outline - what to expect?

Number of students attending:
We expect the following students numbers, each week during the following dates:
July 45 - 55 / August 50 - 55
These numbers are estimated based on 2007!

After class many exciting cultural activities are oferred: Dumpling making, Chinese calligraphy, city sightseeing and Chinese martial arts are just a few examples of the cultural activities students will enjoy. Soccer, ping pong, swimming and beach parties allow students some down time as well as the opportunity to socialize and get to know each other outside of the classroom.

At the weekends students enjoy exciting excursions organized by the school including trips to Suzhou, the canal city of Zhouzhuang, Changfeng Ocean Park,Yinqixang (Indoor Ski Park), Shanghai Zoo, Dino Beach Water Park, Shanghai Ocean Aquarium & Hangzhou.

STUDENT FEEDBACK

"I had an amazing time. I met some really great people and got to see a different side of the world while being immersed in the language.

I would definitely recommend this program to anyone who wants to do something memorable, exciting and even educational! Living in the residence was very fun. Having a maid and a chef everyday made it feel like you were almost in a hotel - but not!

I really liked my teacher, but I think the organization of placing students into different levels could use improvement.
RACHEL W (age 17)
